Since gaining independence in 1965, Singapore has undergone an extraordinary journey of development under the leadership of three Prime Ministers: Lee Kuan Yew, Goh Chok Tong, and Lee Hsien Loong.
On May 15, 2024, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong officially concluded his term.
On the same day, Lawrence Wong Shyun Tsai solemnly took the oath of office at the Istana and assumed the heavy responsibility, becoming the fourth Prime Minister in Singapore’s history.

At 8 p.m., the Istana was illuminated, and President Tharman Shanmugaratnam took the stage to preside over the solemn inauguration ceremony.
He began by delivering an enthusiastic speech at the swearing-in ceremony of Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and the new cabinet members.
Tharman Shanmugaratnam likened this historic moment to “yet another smooth and orderly transition in Singapore’s political leadership,” marking the beginning of a new chapter for Singapore. His speech not only looked back on the past but also emphasized the challenges and opportunities that the new leadership team will face.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong delivered a heartfelt speech at the swearing-in ceremony of the new cabinet.
He began by expressing profound respect for former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, thanking him for his outstanding contributions to the nation. He pledged to build upon his predecessor’s legacy and work tirelessly to contribute to the country’s future.
Prime Minister Wong mentioned in his address that Singapore’s remarkable achievements are the result of the tireless efforts of countless predecessors.
He expressed his heartfelt gratitude, stating that since he entered politics, Lee Hsien Loong has been his mentor and friend. He emphasized that whether in political guidance or cabinet work, Lee has provided him with immense support and encouragement.
Prime Minister Wong also extended special gratitude to Lee Hsien Loong for agreeing to remain in the cabinet and continue providing valuable wisdom and insights for the nation.
He mentioned his close connection to Singapore’s independence era and proudly stated that their generation has witnessed the forging of the nation’s values. These values include integrity, meritocracy, fairness, and equality.
Lawrence Wong emphasized that Singapore will face new challenges and issues in the face of the current global uncertainties and the ever-changing domestic social needs.
However, he firmly believes that as long as the nation stands united, it can creatively and flexibly tackle various challenges with innovative thinking and methods, thereby collectively creating a better life.
